Is your team exploring Green Star yet?
According to the Green Building Council of Australia, more than 80% of Australians believe climate action is necessary and they’re not just talking about government policy or energy reform. They’re asking for change in the places we live, work, learn and play. Green Star scheme offers a trusted, measurable way to show we’re not just talking sustainability, we’re proving it.
The Green Star scheme
The Green Star scheme, administered by the Green Building Council of Australia, awards points for a range of categories that contribute to the planning, construction and operation of an environmentally sustainable building.
This includes energy use, transportation, water use, emissions, and materials. A building, fit-out or community can be assessed and rated on a star scale from 1 (minimum practice) to 5 (Australian Excellence) or 6 (World Leadership).
“Green Star ratings have become a trusted industry hallmark of quality design, effective delivery and efficient operation. The market now talks in ‘stars’. It has become a trusted currency of the property sector and its customers who recognise these benefits and the future value that they represent.” – Cate Harris, Group Head of Sustainability and Lendlease Foundation
The Green Star certification
Green Star certification, by the Green Building Council of Australia, demonstrates that a project has achieved a high standard of design, construction and/or operation and verifies the environmental and social outcomes.
A rating system is applied with credits available for recommended practice across multiple aspects, including materials. For example, products sourced from ResponsibleSteel™ certified sites, such as BlueScope’s Port Kembla facility, may contribute up to 10 Responsible Product Value (RPV) points.
Also, here’s what caught our attention:
- Green Star buildings use 66% less energy and 51% less water
- They attract longer-term tenants, lower running costs, and even open doors to green finance
- It plays nicely with NABERS, WELL, Climate Active and other rating tools

The big question…
Is Green Star becoming the new baseline for how we operate? And more importantly, are we ready?
The demand is already here. The expectation from clients, tenants, and the wider community is growing. The tools exist. So maybe it’s not a matter of if we act, but how soon we decide to lead.
